Course Details

This program will provide you with the skill set required to learn how to lead on bolted sport routes.

Skill Level

This program is for intermediate level climbers with some time spent top roping indoors and outdoors as well.  Climbing gym experience is not necessary but advantageous.

Location

This course will take place at an ideal sport climbing venue in beautiful Banff National Park or surrounding areas around the equally stunning scenery of Canmore, Alberta.

Duration

This is a 2 day course that takes place typically on a weekend with a 4:1 ratio with an ACMG Mountain Guide with over 20 years of guiding and instructional experience.

Course Information

Learn to Lead Sport Climb is an intermediate level course.

Objectives:

  • Learn to lead a sport climbing route safely by understanding the hazards that exist close to the ground.
  • Belay a lead climber and what the differences are from belaying a top rope climber.
  • Set up an anchor using fixed anchor bolts.
  • Clean the anchors and to either lower or rappel back down safely.

You will learn the following:

  • How to use a stick clip.
  • All of the skills of how to belay a lead climber properly.
  • How to find good stances for clipping bolts.
  • How to place the quickdraw and how to clip the rope into the quickdraw correctly.
  • Optimize your energy levels while leading.
  • Set up an anchor for top roping using your own climbing equipment.
  • Build anchors on bolted stations.
  • Evaluate the strength of individual fixed anchor points.
  • We will show you how to evaluate whether to lower or to rappel down and why.
