Learn Trad Rock 101
Leading with 'trad' or traditional gear involves an extensive skill set, strong movement skills and solid protection placement strategies.
This program is considered an intermediate to advanced level program so participants will want a few years of climbing experience which include being able to competently climb up to 5.8-5.9 sport routes and have a rudimentary understanding of anchor systems.
As with all of our programs, we will take steps to identify any and all hazards in our chosen venue that influence our objectives and you will learn to how to mitigate them.
You will be given strategies to select the right routes and objectives for your given skill level, how to select an appropriate rack based on your chosen objective and you will learn and understand why that gear works best for the selected route.
You will learn gear placements and how to assess the strength of your protection and the rock it is being placed in, how to build traditional anchors appropriate for single or multi-pitch climbing routes, protection strategies for leading along with the strengths and limitations of the gear components within the system.
This program as with all of our programs, is principal based which means you learn through thoughtful demonstration & then practice is applied to reinforce each and every individual skill.
Observation and effective coaching of students is optimized by a small instructor to student ratios of 4:1. This allows for timely detection & correction of errors and to be able to evaluate & reinforce success.
The program is centred around fundamentals and then builds off the basics in a progression skills development that makes sense and provides the student with the ability to apply the skill set in a realistic but safe context.
