Abraham Lake Via Ferrata
What is a Via Ferrata?
Via Ferrata is Italian term for the ‘Iron Path'. The origin of the Via Ferrata is that they were built during the First and Second World Wars and were first built by the Italian army in the Dolomite region of the European Alps to provide safe passage for Italian troops involved in high alpine strategic military operations. The essence of a modern Via Ferrata is a steel cable which runs along the route and is fixed to the rock.
A person wearing a climbing harness can secure himself or herself to the cable, limiting the distance of a fall while they climb the iron rungs. A Via Ferrata allows ordinary people (i.e.inexperienced or non-climbers) access to extraordinary mountain terrain without the need for excessive equipment or training in advanced climbing techniques. Via Feratta is relatively new in North America. The Abraham Lake Via Feratta was one of the first purposely built via feratta in the Canadian Rockies.
Where is the Abraham Lake Via Feratta and what is it like?
The Via Ferrata above Abraham Lake is located halfway between Saskatchewan Crossing on the Highway 93 North (Icefields Parkway) and the town of Nordegg on the David Thompson Highway. The route is about 180 metres or roughly 600 ft high cliff along the David Thompson Corridor. It takes roughly 2 ½ hrs to drive from Canmore to the beneath the route, a picturesque 25 minute hike to the base of the Via Feratta, about 1.5 hours to climb the route and finally it takes about 30-40 minutes to walk back down the trail to the car.
When we arrive at climb, we will show you how to secure yourself into the cable with your lanyards as you climb the steel rungs of the Via Ferrata. It is a very leisurely and enjoyable day with stunning views through Lake Louise, the Icefields Parkway on the drive as well the views from above Abraham Lake itself while on the climb are nothing short of spectacular!
