Learn Trad Rock 101

Course Details

Learn to leading with traditional gear requires protection placement skills and evaluation strategies.

Skill Level

This program is an advanced level program.  Participants need to be able to climb 5.7 sport routes and have a rudimentary understanding of anchor systems.

Duration

This is a 2 day course that takes place typically on a weekend with a 4:1 ratio with an ACMG Mountain Guide with over 20 years of guiding and instructional experience.

Course Information

Learn to Lead Trad Rock 101 is an intermediate to advanced course.

Objectives:

  • Competently place running belay anchor points using traditional removable protection.
  • Understand fall factor mechanics .
  • Construct anchors using removable and fixed point protection.

You will learn the following:

  • Discover the nuances of climbing traditional routes on different rock types.
  •  Review climbing hardware and soft good material’s strengths and weaknesses.
  • Place and remove traditional rock gear.
  • Assess fixed anchor points (bolts and pitons).
  • Construct high integrity traditional anchors using the DARN Solid and Timely model.
  • Traditional lead climbing systems will be taught by using mock leading systems.
  • How to select routes that are appropriate for your skill level.
  • Learning to gather pertinent information from guidebooks.
  • Racking up for your route.
  • Visualization techniques for leading a traditional route.
  • Finding optimal placement stances.
  • Anticipating cruxes and learning to down climb.
  • Learn which style of belay devices are appropriate for traditional climbing.
  • Understand the mental aspects of leading on traditional gear.
  • Fall factor mechanics.
